I currently owe $45,000 in student loans and I am having a hard time paying them off. The loans are private (sallie mae) and I am not elligible for consolidating them via federal loans since I am not a US citizen. I was not able to get a visa so I had to leave the US. I live in Europe now.
I understand that declaring bankruptcy would not cancel out the student loans, but I have read that bankruptcy could cancel out credit card debt. I have a good credit score (790), so given some time, with an even higher credit score, I may be able to transfer my loans to a few credit cards.
What are the laws regarding credit card debt and bankruptcy? What difference does it make that I am not a US citizen and do not live in the US?

My ex has the house. The only collaterol I have is some IRA’s that have double the value as my debt.
What alternatives are out there? What do you suggest?
I have great credit, pay on time, not behind. I am wanting to get a home within a year, but will not be able with such a large debt. This monkey on my back is stifiling.
Thank you ahead of time for your suggestions!

I’ve been dealing with a debt collection agency trying to make me pay for a phone line I never had. I’ve gone through all kinds of calls, and for some reason, Sprint does have my personal info, and says I did create a home phone account. I have never owned a home phone in my life though. I had them send me copies of the bills, and there were never any calls made on this line, etc. But I’m getting away from my original question.
I am trying to find out what state the debt originated in. This is because the statute of limitation on debt determines the validity of the debt. Different states have different SOL’s so I need to find out what state Sprint debts originate in.
I’ve looked all over the internet, but cannot find any answers. HELP!
Thanks all!
I live in Florida, and did at the time the “debt” originated. I believe the creditor can pick whichever state has the longer SOL. Luckily Florida is 4 years, and that passed a few days ago. kansas is only 3 years, so that’d be great.

I have been using MS Money on and off for the past two years. I’ve found it difficult and doesn’t help as much to track debt and debt payments. It looks like it would work well for tracking investments.
Has anyone else used other software such as Quicken when their net worth is in the negative?

Alright, to make a long boring and very aggrivating story for me short, I had a really rough start when I first went to college. I wound up in financial troubles and wasn’t able to attend my classes and wound up kicked out of the university. But now, somehow for reasons unknown, I owe the university I was attending $3000. I paid in advance for every semester I attended. But, now I am trying to go back to a junior college to get my grades up. (but I can’t get a transcript w/o paying the debt). What I would like to know is does anyone know a way to pay this debt off? I don’ t have really any skills so if I got a job, I’d be paying for nothing but daycare and wouldn’t be getting anywhere. We don’t have good credit so I can’t take out a personal loan. I plan on talking to the financial aid office and the university to ask why I owe this debt. But I would also like to know if anyone out there would know of any other suggestions for me. Thanks for your time!
Mike
