How do I find out who to pay when I’m trying to pay off my debt?

I have a few accounts that are currently in collections that range from store cards, credit cards, and bills….but since they’re now in collections, how am I supposed to know who I submit payments to? And how to I find out if there are any errors in any of the collection amounts? I have about $5000 in debt that I have accumulated since 2002…when can i expect to see improvement on my credit if i can pay this off by the end of the year and begin to rebuild then as well?

Mind you, I at one point kept the collection letters for my records for when i would be able to pay but those letters are now lost.

Go to your bank and ask them those exact questions. They will give you the best answers that people on here couldn’t unless they know from experience or are the debt solvers. Don’t be afraid of sounding dumb, because tellers know exactly where to send you as long as you are honest.

You should get each debt from a credit report. After that you should combine them all through a debt consolidator program where you are making one payment and they will make each payment for you.

You are on the right track. First off pull a credit report. There are three reporting agencies and they ll report a little different. For instance, you may have debt on transunion that you don’t on equifax or experian. Different companies use different reports sometimes. Once you have the reports go through them calling and tracking your debt down. Most times they will work with you. Be sure to ask them to send you a letter showing that you paid. This will help…also, you may check into getting a loan against a CD or something so you can build some current credit. Many times a lender only cares about what you have done lately. It isn’t going to clear up overnight so be patient and don’t lose sigh of your goal. Good luck

get your credit report. (freecreditreport.com) it’ll tell you how much do owe in each company, the specific date’s, address and phone numbers. some of ‘em are duplicate so make sure you double check. If you have the letter, you can dispute some of ‘em especially anything over 7 yeasr. goodluck!

I would call each account first and ask who the collection agency is. If that doesn’t work, I would send the payment to the original store, credit organizations with a letter explaining the situation and asking that they forward to the collection agency. Keep copies of everything! You can start rebuilding your credit immediately with prompt payment on all utilities, and other bills. If you decide to buy a car, that will help rebuild your credit quite fast. You can also work with your bank to deposit funds, then use a bank issued MC or Visa. That way your credit will get better and the funds are your own and regulated by your bank. Good luck and God Bless!
