OOgaCHucka asked:
My husband filed our taxes online last year, and forgot my w-2. The IRS just sent me a notice saying I owe around 2500. I would be getting a refund of 5200. Can I get out of part -or all!-of this debt? I believe it was an error on his part, him having never filed taxes before (I usually do it, but was dealing with a brand new baby, colic, and post-partum depression)….

Just designate $2500 of your $5200 refund to pay your 2006 tax debt.. simple as that. Then you will still be getting $2700 refunded. You can’t just “get out of it” because you had a baby.. the IRS doesn’t care who and what.. etc.. caused the error, all they care about is the error itself and you still have to pay it. Best of Luck.
Never go by what the IRS says you owe.
If you are the one who does the taxes, then revise the 2006 return by using a form 1040x.
Most often, what IRS says you owe is without considering any of your deductions…giving them free money.
For instance, this happened to me.
IRS sent me a letter saying I owe $4203 because of a form 1099 misc and a w-2 that we did not turn in because we didn’t have them at tax time.
When I did the math on the revised 1040x, I only owe $2832.
Unfortunately, it will still come out of our big refund this year, but that’s $1400 off of the original debt IRS said we owed.
no – they will deduct what you owe from any refunds this year – they will ad on penalty and interest if you wait too long to file or pay that tax
